UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders

UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders

It was a week ago that I revealed my RTW plans and the beginning of my quest for visas.  Every Filipino who have experienced applying visas to Japan, US and Europe (Schengen, UK) can relate to this agony.  I went through both before but it doesn’t get easier. Since I’m going through the whole process again, I thought I’d make an outline to give future Filipino applicants a starting point. Digging through pages and pages of requirements can truly cause nausea, no kidding. So here you go, a blow by blow account on how to apply for UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders.

Pilipinas Pasaporte

UK VISA

The United Kingdom (UK) is composed of the following 4 countries: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.  As a Filipino passport holder, let it be a default to assume we needed visa to travel anywhere outside Southeast Asia. UK is no exception. There are several visa types but I’ll be focusing on Tourist Visa.  UK visa is applied through official partner UK Border Agency online.

My focus will only be for tourist visa application. If you’re studying, working, marrying, or visiting family, I’m sure there’s a whole other bunch of stuff you need to prepare. I can’t help you with it, sorry.

Restrictions in visiting UK as a tourist:

  1. Visit to UK cannot be for more than six (6) months;
  2. Leave the UK at the end of your visit;
  3. Have enough money to support yourself during your stay in the UK without working or needing help from public funds.
  4. Will not take paid or unpaid employment.

When to Apply for UK Visa?

As with most countries, UK visa can be applied maximum of 3 months before intended entry.

Where to Apply for UK Visa?

There are 2 parts in UK Visa Application: (1) Online Application  (2) Appointment to submit biometric and supporting documents.

  1. Have in hand your passport, UK address (hotel booking or friend’s address), email address and begin your  online visa application. You will need to print the application form after you complete the process.  Every person is required have a visa application. Children are considered persons.  Somewhere in the website you’ll find a link to download application form to fill up by pen. Don’t bother with this, as this is for those countries that do not have online application option.
  2. Book Appointment via:
    • online booking page (this is free)
    • call centre: PLDT / Smart Subscribers 1-909-885-VISA (8472); for Bayantel 1-903-VISAUK or 1-903-847285. PHP 32.00 for each minute for landline calls (excluding VAT and applicable NDD charges for calls made outside Metro Manila). No reason to use this call centers. They charge per minute and will probably spell your name wrong.

What to bring to the Appointment?

  • A printed and signed copy of your online visa application form
  • Your current valid passport  Note: The UK Border Agency will retain your passport until they have reached a decision on your visa application. Bear in mind if you have travel plans before going to UK.
  • Previous passports
  • Original supporting documents, with photocopies and translations
  • Printed copy of the supporting document checklist
  • Payment or proof of payment of visa application fee.
  • 1 recent photograph (not more than 6 months old) according to below specification.

Photograph Strict Specification

  • Taken against a light grey or cream background;
  • Clear and of good quality;
  • Printed on normal photographic paper;
  • 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
  • Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons. The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.

What are supporting documents?

Simply put, these are documents that show evidence that you have ties in the Philippines and that you are coming back–job, family ties, properties, etc. Also documents that shows you are capable of supporting yourself while in UK without the need to find employment–Bank statements, certificates, employment payslip, credit cards, etc. All these should be submitted during the appointment. No further documents will be accepted after. Now, while the absence of these documents may result in unsuccessful visa application, submission does not guarantee visa issuance. More info on UK Visa Supporting Document

If you’re not paying for your own way, or have friend(s) in UK who will support you, you should present them with the following documents:

  • Valid Citizen/Residence ID or Passport
  • Bank Statement
  • Address and contact details
  • Invitation letter stating their support

How much is UK Visa? Where to pay for UK Visa? (Updated 12-17-12)

Tourist Visa {short term up to 6 months} costs USD 129.

Since December 17, 2012, visa fee can only be made online. It will form as part of the online application process. When all items are filled up, you will be directed to the website of WorldPay where you have the choice to pay with Visa or Mastercard.  They no longer accept payment in person like I did before.

Waiting for Result

If there are no further delays (lacking or unverifiable document), you should have result in approximately 4-5 working days. Track your application through the free Application Status Tool.  You can collect documents personally or have the option to have it delivered to your home by paying Php 450. You also get an SMS saying it’s on its way.

Update: So lesson learned, if you are planning to visit in summer, you have to apply earlier. March and April is really hectic. I received mine in 15 days. This is also because of the Royal Wedding coming up on April 29, 2011.

UK Visa for Filipino Passport Holders kicks off the Visa for Pinoy Series I’m starting in this blog. Here’s hoping it will be a good starting point in your application. I had to go through labyrinth of information to get here.  I don’t have my visa yet but I’ll update often!  Now, moving on to a totally unrelated topic, this is my 100th post! :)

NOTES & UPDATE: I just came back from a very easy application submission. My schedule was for 9:40am and I was there 9:30am as the website suggested.  You have to reschedule if you’re more than 20 minutes late. Total wait time is about 2 hours but once my number is called, it took less than 5 minutes for them to check my documents and then another 5 minutes for them to take my biometric data.

Like I said I was there for 2 hours with about 80 people ahead of me. I saw a lot of people being sent back and forth to rearrange their document, or having to filled up more forms, or worse being asked to come back. Here are few notes to guarantee you out in a jiffy!

  1. No need to submit photocopy your application form and passports. They’ll ask you to take it out. Save trees too!
  2. Paste the photo on to the application form. Not stapled, not taped, but pasted.
  3. Print copy of the supporting document checklist and check (tick) those supporting document that you’re submitting.  Some people didn’t, so they have to fill this up when there.
  4. Arrange document in the order presented on the checklist.
  5. Bring original supporting documents and have a photocopy of them.  I don’t know how many people had to go out and have their document photocopied. Note that you will leave with them ALL your original document (land title, lease document, business registration, bank statements, financial statement, etc.) to be returned with your visa.
  6. You can only go in with your documents placed in an envelope. Bags and phones will have to be left at their package counter (at the guard).  So much more consideration than the US Embassy.

  12. Noelle 06/26/2014 at 4:35 pm #

Hi Wanderlass and readers of your blog, just want to share our experience in applying for our UK general visit visa.

We submitted documents and biometrics last June 9. From the time we submitted our application, not once did we get any update from VFS even if we availed of the SMS/email update for 150 pesos. We got worried so we followed up via email. As of last Friday, June 20 according to the reply, my husband’s application “has not been assessed by an Entry Clearance Officer.” After getting that email we thought it was impossible to have our application processed within 15 working days. Yesterday i received an email from VFS saying “the processed visa application for GWF…was received at the UK Visa Application Centre” with instructions how to retrieve passports (either courier or personal collection). Based on what I’ve read from blogs and forums, if you get that email and nothing else, you’re most likely denied. Usually the approved ones get a separate email from the UK Embassy directly… So we expected the worst. To my surprise, today, I got our passports back with approved UK visas.

Just wanted to share – you can never really know you’re approved or denied by basing it with their updates or emails. You’ll really have to wait until you get your passport back to see for sure.

    Good luck to everyone!

    • danleighyan 07/03/2014 at 9:55 am #

Hi po, tanong Lang , what kind of card did you use during payment akin kc is BPI CARD..Do you think this is ok for them …planning to apply next week.

    • Hanie 07/04/2014 at 8:15 pm #

      Hi Noelle,

What kind of visa did u apply for? I am processing my spouse visa and your advice would be of great help.

      • Noelle 07/08/2014 at 10:52 am #

I applied for general visitor visa

        • Abby 07/11/2014 at 11:00 pm #

Hi Noelle just want to ask what documents have u been submitted? As i was pass this wednesday the invitation letter from my boyfriend that indicate there we will travel together. Also his bank statement also my bank statement too. Our birth certificate together!!! Photocopy of his passport and his seaman ID photocopy asweel and the booking ticket. And our pictures together!!! You think they will approve me a visa??

          • Noelle 07/11/2014 at 11:46 pm #

Hi Abby, I’m not sure if we applied for the same visa type. My husband and I applied for a general visitor visa. We just submitted everything they required as support document which is found in the website.

            https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/294927/Visitor_Documents.pdf

As for the approval, I cannot really predict what the British Consulate’s decision will be. If you’re confident that you provided the necessary documents then I guess there’s nothing to worry about.

        • danleighyan 07/16/2014 at 1:54 pm #

….hi can you tell mere exact amount of visa payment ?

    • danleighyan 07/08/2014 at 2:07 pm #

Hi Noele,,,,how much exactly is the payment for visitor visa,,as know before it’s 5000 plus but don’t know today
Can you give me details about it?

Hi! I was just wondering papaano ako makakapagbigay ng supporting documents like financial and such. My mom and I would like to visit UK but siya lang ang may bank books and credit cards, properties, payslips and such. I just finished my studies so kahit proof of enrollment wala akong maipapakita na I have ties here in PH pa. Sabay sana kami magaapply pero ang worry ko talaga is yung financial docs. You have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!

    • wanderlass 06/22/2014 at 4:12 pm #

I think there is a good chance as long as you can prove that they will support you financially during your stay, or if you are supporting yourself, you have to prove you have enough money to do so. The bottom line is you will not be a burden to their country when you visit.

    Hi

I am planning to travel to UK with my 1 year old Daughter this August. My daughter is in the Philippines and I on the other hand is working In Singapore. Do I need to book an appointment for her in the Philippines (Uk Agent Centre) for the interview & submission of documents ?
Or can I just tag along her visa application with mine , so I bring her with me when my appointment is booked here in Singapore since she an (under 18)?

Thank you and hope someone can help me with this matter..

    • wanderlass 06/22/2014 at 4:23 pm #

The UK Visa Information states that every person applying for visa need to appear at the center. So either she comes with you on your Singapore interview or you set up another one for her here in the Philippines

My uncle is planning to go to London and he wants to bring us with him. He’ll pay for everything, from airfare to lodging and even our stay there. But the thing is, he lives in Texas and we’re here in the Philippines. How can we prove the financial capability?

    • Paula 06/20/2014 at 11:59 pm #

Also, I have never gone out of the country. If I get approved, this will be my first out of the country trip. Will it matter to my application? Do I need to go out of the country first?

      • wanderlass 06/22/2014 at 4:24 pm #

you only need to prove you have enough money to support your travel and enough reason that you will come back home.

    • wanderlass 06/22/2014 at 4:10 pm #

He can send his papers (invitation letter, proof of support, proof of financial capability) through courier or USPS for you to submit.

Hi krashi pwede ba kita ma add sa fb? My tatanong lang po ako thanks

  33. Jaine 03/04/2014 at 9:21 pm #

Hi Wanderlass? Okay lang po ba walang work? Merun pala akong sponsor. I’ll be staying 6months, How much po possibly for bank statement ko? Estimated lng po. Thank you.

    • krashi 04/20/2014 at 4:17 pm #

Hi Jaine , ok lang kahit wala kang work if supported ka naman ng sponsor mo. Sagot naman nya lahat ng expenses. I don’t have idea if how much ang money sa bank , basta maconvince mo lang ang embassy na babalik ka ng pilipinas after you visit .

Hello po I’m Alyssa from Pampanga. I’m stuck w/ this question in my visa application online . “How much of your total monthly income is given to your family members and other dependants?” really need help. hindi ko po masyado maintindihan. Thank you.

    • Sway 04/20/2014 at 8:57 pm #

Never ever tell them that you tend to stay for 6months. You will be denied for sure.

  34. Rio Lynda Negara 02/27/2014 at 6:52 pm #

    Hi!

The checklist document cannot be opened… Can u send me a link if there is? Thanks

  35. pageantf 02/06/2014 at 10:33 am #

Hi, i just want to know if you got an email from UKBA for the status of your visa application before you received your passport back? Do they usually send an email notif? I heard others got email from UKBA Manila saying “your visa will be dispatched shortly” and they actually got their passport back with the approved visa the following day. I only received one from VFS saying that my processed application has been couriered back to me and i’m still waiting for it to arrive. So i’m only wondering whether i was refused or not. Excitement is killing me. LOL

    • Sway 02/22/2014 at 1:34 am #

I got the same text from the VFS and when i opened the envelope i have all the copies of the docs i presented and a letter stating their refusal to give me a visa.. Got that twice since i applied twice already

      • D 03/04/2014 at 4:15 pm #

        Hi Sway,

How long did it take to process your visa application? And how long before you can reapply after denied?

      • pageantf 03/12/2014 at 10:12 am #

Did you get the same reasons for refusal? I’m waiting for the result of my second application.

    • D 03/04/2014 at 4:17 pm #

If you dont mind my asking, what was the result of your application

    • mhie 03/07/2014 at 2:12 pm #

I got that same email too from UKBA, suspense is killing me also haha, especially as I have no job and only 40,000 “show money” but I will know in the next few days :)

    • Rae 03/28/2014 at 10:45 pm #

“your visa will be dispatched shortly” Ouch I don’t received this msg too! :-( Did u get the approval? Pageantf?

    • Robert Burgess 04/10/2014 at 10:06 pm #

Hi, my wife was at the VFS office in Makati just 3 days ago to apply for her 5th ‘family visit’ visa to UK.( the last 4 were succesful and relatively hassle-free). In the past she received SMS and email updates of the progress of her application, even from day one. So far, this time wala! Even though she paid an extra fee to be updated. What is more worrying is NO reference number was given that she could track her application on-line. I already e-mailed the ‘contact us’ option in UK but was given an automated reply. Every year has been a different way to apply and this year is the most worrying. Has anyone who applied recently NOT been given that tracking ref. #? Its the one that starts “AMAN ______/ ______” or similar format to that. Thanks.

      • hee hoo hum (@heehoohum) 04/11/2014 at 5:12 pm #

Hi, filed my application Mar 28 using their VIP premium service , which is supposed to come with free SMS and email notifications. To date, not a single SMS was received. All emails and calls yielded useless reply. No tracking no issued too so still waiting. So much hassle.

        • Robert Burgess 04/14/2014 at 5:34 pm #

After extensive, mind-numbing searching through the websites of VFS and UK Visas and Immigration I’m yet to find a satisfactory reason why my wife has received no information on the progress of her visa application. The only reason I can come up with (and it’s an educated guess) is that there were some changes made to the system on April 1st this year and that the tracking and SMS/email service is now obsolete. Maybe, hopefully a message is sent when the application is complete. Every year the process is different. A headache for the applicants. Thanks and Good Luck!

          • hee hoo hum (@heehoohum) 04/15/2014 at 4:57 pm #

Received an email from UKVI this am that states “your visa will be despatched shortly.” That’s the only email i have received so far. Hoping for a positive outcome.

          • Robert Burgess 04/15/2014 at 5:13 pm #

Thats Good! I found that going to http://www.ukvi-international.faq-help.com and proceeding to the email form I could make contact. There are some options to pay (again) to talk or live chat but I just emailed and got a response a few hours later. Not yet processed but at least we know it’s “in the system”.

          • Sway 04/17/2014 at 1:08 am #

            Congratulations!

          • Robert Burgess 04/25/2014 at 3:30 pm #

Just received e-mail. “Your visa will be dispatched shortly”. That’s a decision in 12 working days. Could anyone confirm that 2GO is the courier for VFS?

          • hee hoo hum (@heehoohum) 04/17/2014 at 10:13 am #

Got my visa yesterday. Exactly 19 calendar days. I guess their 15 days is really 15 working days. Upon receipt of advisory from UKVI, just proceed to Vfs on the next working day at 2pm to pick up your docs :)

          • Robert Burgess 04/17/2014 at 12:26 pm #

            Congrats!

          • Philip 04/26/2014 at 2:24 am #

I applied april 4 and only got notification stating that it was received but until now still no new update. I’m starting to worry because I have an upcoming flight next week!

          • Robert Burgess 05/01/2014 at 12:01 am #

Hi Philip, no e-mails? Not sure if that is a ‘extra fee only’ service. my wife paid for SMS but didn’t receive any., only e-mails when ‘processed’. Try 2GO tracking service (if you chose to have your documents couriered to you) your tracking No. is the attached to the receipt they should have given you. We have a flight on Saturday May 3rd (not to UK, but obviously need a passport to travel overseas), still not received passport but we live in an Island Province so we’re at the mercy of ferry schedules. Check my earlier post re; contacting UKVI via e-mail, hope they can help you. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. I got my visa yesterday. Didnt receive anything from vfs, just the email from ukvi about my passport being dispatched.

However, as I logged back into the system to download and print my application form, it still tells me that I need to pay. Would you have any thoughts on why this is happening and how I might fix this? Appreciate all your help!! Their visa application system is so complicated…

    Hi,
I am from the UK and me and my family are looking to sponsor my girlfriend to visit us here for the first time, and was just wondering what show money I would need to provide for the visa? I will be paying all expenses and she will be staying with me and my family for the entire trip (just under a month). Any help you could provide on this would be brilliant.

    Excellent blog, very informative :)

    • Venj 09/20/2013 at 6:23 pm #

If you’re sponsoring your girlfriend then you’ll be the one who’s providing a financial statement not your girlfriend, you must provide the prof of residency in uk your house, job, etc… It says in application form everything that you need to provide..

i I am applying a UK visa in the Philippines, but I am still here in Thailand. This will be my second as a family visitor. I was granted a visa in the year 2011 and was there in UK. When I book an appointment on line to have a schedule so that I can arrange my flight for Manila, the booking for appointment always ask my GWF number which I still don’t have. Do I need to book on line first before getting this number? when I book on line, I am difinitely directed to the Bangkok area to submit my documents which I want it done in the Philippines. Please advice me as soon as possible, thank you for your kind assistance.

My documents are pretty much complete except for the financial aspect, since I just got myself a job (like 5 months ago), and just starting out to save. Do you think I have a shot?

Also, do I need to bring my birth certificate? Thanks.

Say for example I have already completed the online application form (which means already paid the visa fee online as well) Then next week is my appointment, do I really need to go to the UK Visa Application Centre in Makati ?because currently I’m in Mindanao.

Thanks in advance for your reply about my question

  60. Europedreamer 04/01/2013 at 3:35 am #

One of the questions was ” Have you ever been refused a visa for any country, including UK?”
Historically, I was denied for a US Visa application last 2010. Should I honestly answer “yes”? Will it lessen my chance of being granted with a UK Visa? Or would it be alright for me to just answer “No”?

I badly need any advise please. Thank you.

hi wanderlass, can you apply directly with the UK embassy? my parents had a terrible experience with VFS Global when they were applying for their schengen visa. VFS almost lost my mom’s passport and took them 2 days to find it. the grief my mom went through thinking that her passport was lost was enough to make her HATE VFS Global. But she still wants to apply for a UK Visa, just not through VFS Global anymore.

    thanks in advance!

    • wanderlass 03/21/2013 at 12:46 am #

I think VFS is the only way you can apply in the Philippines. If you’re applying from another country, I don’t know the answer.

    hi there!
Just wondering on how to pay my visa application fee online through the use of credit card or debit card bearing the master card or visa card logo? Because I have read on the UK border agency website that “From 17 December 2012 if you apply for a UK visa in the Philippines you must pay for your visa online as part of the online application process. You must pay in US dollars using a Visa card or MasterCard. We will not accept other methods of payment from this date”

Thank you very much and looking forward for your most favorable response regarding this query. :)

    • wanderlass 01/16/2013 at 3:45 pm #

You have to complete the application procedure and at the end of the process, you will be directed to world pay where you can pay with either visa or master.

Hey this is cool. Visa aplication seems straightforward.

    One question:
In here it says you need a confirmed hotel booking as compared to the Shengen visa where it is just hotel reservation. For purposes of submission, is it also just possible to just give a reservation for the hotels in London instead of a confirmed and paid hotel booking?

    Thanks

How much do you need on your savings bank account for you to be approved? Does anyone know?

    • wanderlass 12/20/2012 at 10:26 pm #

nobody knows. it only say you should have enough to get by without having to take employment. let’s say you need at least GBP100 per day multiply by # of days of stay, and airfare.

    Hi there,

I just applied for a tourist visa (UK) and is a little worried about my chances of being approved. I have submitted 2 business certificates (salon/clothing store), a copy of a deed of sale (cocoland property), 6 months bank statements, an invitation letter for Christmas from a friend in UK. Do u think those, would be enough for them to give me a UK tourist Visa? Thanks in advance.

    • youngdreamer 01/04/2013 at 12:30 am #

hi are you married or do you have kids? i think if you have it would be a good proof of family ties that you will be coming back here in the philippines :) have u ever been issued of other visas before like US or australian visa in the last 5 years? because they usually ask for that and ur bank statement should have an average daily balance (ADB) for the last 6 months :) as long as u cn prove that u cn support urself while u are in UK u have a high chance of approval.

  83. Alexis 11/26/2012 at 5:40 pm #

is the supporting document checklist, the same as the supporting document guidance – visitors and direst airside transit shown at the right upper side of the uk border agency website? If not where can i get the said cheklist? and one more thing, do my friends emailed supporting documents re passport, p60, employment cert shall be stamp “certified true copy”? please let me know, my appointment will be this week. thank u

i have question regarding what to do, my friend is a Filipino living Austria.
She is married in austria and want to come to UK as general visitor for 2 weeks in december over xmas, and can support her stay and all expenses with 1600 euro.

I am unemployed full time student renting property (we have spare rooms), I can provide free accomodation for her stay and she will have sufficient funds to support herself for the duration, to cover living costs, site seeing and so on. how would we approach supporting documents to proceed in this way? what would I need to provide as supporting documents as she will be supporting herself financialy?
I cannot provide bank statements as i am a student constantly in my overdraft…
Only employment in past 1 year and 3 months was part time for 2 m
Scott R: or is it an easier option for my friend to book accomdation at a hotel for her stay?

    Please help,

    Thank you in advance

    • wanderlass 11/09/2012 at 1:51 pm #

If she is able to produce document that she can support her stay, it is better to not get you involve in her application. She can make hotel reservation and cancel it 24 hours before if she isn’t going to use it.

      • ms.mk 11/09/2012 at 10:27 pm #

Hi Wanderlass thank you for your reply..Its really help me alot… As what u have said avoid my bf any hassle of papers and not involve into it, Sure i do produce my own papers and all travelling hotel ect. I want to travel here over christmas and my question is if they will assume me travelling alone in the uk over the christmas and new year. And also being alone in uk as tourist over Christmas period when u married is not question for them? Thank you. Best Regards Ms.mk

I applied for the UK business visa last year and this year and got 180 days multiple entry. Its was an easy application. just passed the letter of invitation from company in UK and form and some Bank statement. Got an sms the day after I passed my application. Got scared that my visa application was rejected because the processing was too pass.
but shocked to see my visa approved :-)

thank you wanderlass for this great informative blog you have.
thanks to those who have shared their experiences & ideas as well.

i am planning to invite my mum to come to the UK for 6months on a Tourist visa.
she’s 78yrs old, retired with a pension & have a time deposit saving of 1M on her name.

im unemployed, a full-time mum & housewife here in the UK But i have about £2000 in my bnk account, own 3 properties (all in my name) in the Philippines & a bank account of about 200,000 pesos.

i am separated with my ex-husband and now living with my new partner (unmarried) with our 2yr old girl. I am already a British citizen holding a British passport and have changed my surname back to mine (when i was single) via Deed Poll certificate. My partner is working as an Engr and is being paid well. But our house is still on mortgage.

my question is: WILL MY MUM still need to be sponsored?
IF yes, will my PARTNER’s bank account, payslip, passport & landtitle (mortgage certificate) be acceptable? Since we are not married yet? Or will my documents be enough? With regards to the ties between my partner to my Mum….i have my child’s birth certificate to prove as it is stated in the PARENTS name: my partner & mine as parents.

Please I need your ideas about this.

    Thank you, really appreaciated.

My half brother owns a business and I can ask him to help me with this if they’ll only be asking an employment certificate. Hope you can help me with this. Thanks!

Hi Wanderlass, this blog is so helpful that I made it as my step to step guidelines through out my application filling until my documents submitting.
I submitted my visit visa application and docs on Sept. 28, the same night, I received a text message saying that my docs has been dispatched to the British embassy ( that was fast ).
After 3 days, I received another text message saying that my visa is being processed ( that was fast, again) so, up until now, i am still waiting for the result.
How long does it take for the UK embassy to come up with a decision?
Again, thank you for putting up this blog, it is really helpful for first timers like me :)
God bless and be safe and have fun in your wandering :)

Well I found a checklist from an old application form dated in 2010..but there’s nothing on the form that was updated on July 2012 .I looked on UKBA , read than i can download supporting documents checklist, but when i opend the pdf file it was a Supporting Documents guidance. What checklist did you use? is there any chance you can give me the link of the checklist? thank you..

I will be staying with my Mother in her house for 2weeks and i will be coming straight back to manila , I will be supporting my GF, As of this moment my GF is NOT working and i know this could be an issue. I have so many Q’s on what documentation will be needed in order for her application to be successful. could you possibly give a list. Also i dont know if this will help but my mother and sister both work for British Airways , my Mum is putting my GF and I on her staff travel. will this help in anyway? please could you get back to me asap? Thanks

any document that will support reason of leaving UK after visa is up (return home) is helpful. proof of afinity to philippines: good job, property ownership, children. You can try that proof of employment (ur aunt) stating a good position and above average income without going overboard(unbelievable). Bear in mind that it could be verified.

      Hi Aisha …

Why are you applying for a tourist visa, when you are married to a British guy? Do you NOT PLAN to stay with him in the UK?\\\

Because if you do (want to permanently stay in the UK) you should be applying for a “Spouse Visa” and NOT a “Tourist Visa”!

Please let me know what exactly are your plans: stay with husband in the UK or just really visit?

I “might” be able to help, as I am married to a British guy as well?

in most cases if you’re a legal resident of the country, you can apply visa in the embassy there. requirement will be the same. call the embassy to inquire.

      Hi Edith …

You said you are married to someone British. I just have a few questions:

      1) Where were you married?
      2) Where exactly are you now?
      3) Where is your husband’s regular “country of residence”?

It is very important that I know which situation you are “in” at the moment for me to be able to give you some straight answers!

Hello! I want to go to UK as as Visitor, I will sponsor my visit by myself but I don’t have bank account, etc. Can my parents the one will provide it? What are the requirements if my parents will be paying my visit? Will I need to present their my parents bank account?

  109. Steve 09/04/2012 at 5:36 pm #

It has become more difficult to obtain visas to come to the UK since 2011 mainly because it has become a very sensitive political matter and because of the numbers of people overstaying. What you need to do is to produce documentary evidence of everything that will make it essential for you to return home to : Property, family, job etc. You will also need to provide documentary evidence of how you will pay for your travel both ways and supporting yourself (including accomodation and food) while you are in the UK. If you don’t provide enough evidence, your application WILL fail. By documentary evidence, I don’t mean letters from friends or family although a letter from the person you are visiting is useful and essential if they are going to be supporting you and they will also need to provide documentary evidence of their bank accounts and where you will stay. Hope this helps

Thanks for your blog, it’s so helpful..
I would like to apply for a tourist visa soon but i think one of the requirements is the itinerary and where you will stay.
do you have any idea about this? i have my sister in UK but i don’t want to bother her…also, I sponsored her for her student visa in UK, will this affect my application, in case?
    Thanks..looking forward for your advice..

    • Steve Bidwell 10/20/2012 at 5:08 am #

The importance of where you will stay is only if you have limited funds. Immigration wants to see that you have enough money for the travel and a proper place to stay and everything else you will need without having to work or steal etc.

      • Annabelle 10/14/2012 at 2:24 am #

I am honestly not so sure it will be in your favour, declaring that your father is already bedridden, and that his being bedridden is a guarantee that you are coming back to the Philippines? Because if he is that sick, “Can you really afford to be away for a maximum of 6 months/”, will be your “interviewer’s” next question.

Don’t you have any plans of getting married with your BF? Because if you do, you are, MAYBE, better off applying for a “Fiancee Visa”?

        • Kathleen 10/23/2012 at 6:41 pm #

Hi Anabelle. I am a Filipina from Cebu, planning to get married by March 2013 to my British boyfriend.

          a. I would just like to inquire about the procedures and information the application for spouse visa.

          b. Is it easier to get a fiancee visa, hence my boyfriend was asked to compile some documents to submit to the British Consulate before marriage?

Thank you and hope to hear from you. God bless.

Also, I completely agree with how they give the information on the website to actively confuse you. Only after digging around did we find that we needed photocopies of all the documents and if you look at the supporting documents pdf file it says that if you have a sponsor then they need to provide all the same info as you would if funding your own trip. However if you look at the sponsor section of the website only it says you just need to provide letter of invitation and bank statements OR passbook. NOT the same.

So I agree with a lot of you that is made over-complicated. However to the girl that says that 21 days is given free for those going to Phili, I would like to add that the renewals over a 6 month period add up to a lot more than 5500peso for UK tourist visa. Also my friend renewed his at 2 months for an extra week and had to spend 7000 peso (in Tacloban), I extended for another month over my 2 months and only paid 4500 (in Puerto Galera). This amounts to corruption in my eyes as the guy I dealt with allowed me not to have an ID card, even though both of us showed when our flights would be. Think the bloke took pity on me and I told him I was interviewed with that bakla from Showtime and we joked about it, heheh. I just wish there was one rule for all. AND, annoyingly in Phili, if, as a foreigner, you pay enough you can get lifetime residence no questions asked. It’s all about money at the end of the day, I’m sure UK visa people fail some applications because they want the fee all over again. In england they do the same with one’s driving test. No matter where you go, it’s all about money.

interesting blog and comments. As a British citizen, I am sponsoring my girlfriend for a general tourist visa. She has been asked to pick up her passport and documents tomorrow so I guess we will find out then whether it was given or rejected. bit nervous as the hassle and time of doing it again is just not something i wish to contemplate right now.

My biggest worry is that because I am unemployed (having recently returned from backpacking Philippines) that I had to use my mother as an additional sponsor, hoping they accept that. bombarded them with bank statements and certificates, invitation letters, copies of passports and my own visas to phili and pics of us together. wish I had printed out some of our facebook conversations as well now.

Also, you say it has to be original documents (+photocopies) , well how was I supposed to send the original copies of bank statements and property ownership from the UK. I would never send that stuff in the post. So I just did colour scans and then got her to photocopy them as well to make them look more authentic. hmmm….

oh and it took 10 working days, longer than I had anticipated!

  115. Cylen 09/03/2011 at 11:34 am #

Oh thanks for this as I will start applying for the UK visa. I am just waiting for my court clearance as the Supreme Court is my employer. This is really a big help.

    Hello there!

I commend you for the diligence of this travel blog. I backpack, too. I have backpacked all of SEA for a total of 2 months all on my own and will be in Europe this time for close to 2 months for backpacking as well.

Thanks for the info. It’s a great help for me.

Please i need ur help asap kasi po mag aapply na po ako next week. thanks in advance

    • wanderlass 08/05/2011 at 1:31 am #

i think minimum they give is 6mo. i only said i will be there for 2 mo and they gave me 6mo

  119. angel 07/12/2011 at 9:22 pm #

Ive heard that when u apply for tourist visa they will give you 6months, but then also ive heard that if you fill up the form you dnt have to fill the whole 6 months of ur stay in UK so it would be easily granted. right? Even if u just say u will visit UK for 2 months on ur application, are u still allowed to use the 6months visa once granted?

  120. turista 07/05/2011 at 9:31 am #

Brought my papers to the VFS days ago.

Re “You can collect documents personally or have the option to have it delivered to your home by paying Php 450. You also get an SMS saying it’s on its way.”

Actually, we only need to pay P330 for having documents delivered back to us. They charge P110 for the “realtime SMS and email updates”. The guard gave a brown form asking for our name, mobile number and email add, right? By signing that form and giving it to the service desk, we authorize them to charge you for that P110. The people there don’t really say that SMS service is optional. It was only after I read the form’s fine print and saw the P110 fee item listed as addl service down their tarps that I deduced that the SMS service is optional.

ps I am sponsoring my whole trip

    • Mikey 07/06/2011 at 9:16 pm #

If you are sponsoring your trip then you don’t need a letter. You in effect are the sponsor. If you have previous immigration history that will help a lot.

  122. memem 07/01/2011 at 7:01 pm #

please I need an urgent answer, what if you do not have any freinds in UK and you intend to visit as a tourist why will they need an invitation letter?as a tourist do you need an invitation letter?what docs will you have to provide if you want to visit as a tourist and have no freinds in UK

    • wanderlass 07/02/2011 at 5:39 pm #

if u have no sponsor, naturally u don’t have to submit invitation letter

      • memem 07/03/2011 at 1:02 am #

thanks for the reply.but I do have a cousin there can she send me an iv letter and I hope they wont use it against me by saying she is family and not a friend so the right form should be a family visit form for the application

I will apply for a UK tourist visa for my gf later this month. Inteneded trip is 6 months. She has a job to return, land and immigration history however I will need to sponsor her. I have all my bank statements but there will only be about £2500 in my account come the application. Will this be enough? There is obviously lots of money coming in and out of the account every week/month. Does anybody have an idea of how much is expected?

    • wanderlass 06/03/2011 at 11:33 am #

i think an active bank account is good.

    • Pete 06/03/2011 at 11:52 am #

All I know is that they will look for 6 months history of statements. If you have a regular income, ie salary or pension, you should either highlight it or mention it in your covering letter. To cover your ass, if you have anything else, like a property in the UK, etc, it’s worth adding any information just to prove you’ve got more assets than £2.5K.

Make sure also, you get a letter from her employer, saying that they are expecting her back in 6 months. If she has proof of regular salary,ie payslips, this will help.

      Good Luck

      • Mikey 06/03/2011 at 3:40 pm #

THanks for the response. I will let you al know how things went. It may help further applications :-)

Congrats and u got ur visa! Me and my fiance are planning to get a tourist visa for me (UK). as of the moment i have my pending case for my annulment and hoping to be done early this year, and hoping to get married here in Phillipines after the annulment.Do you think it is possible for me to submit a
1)certification from my lawyer granting that my annulment will be done soon attached the petition of my case,
    2) a death certificate of my mother to prove that i need to come back coz my father and siblings need me
3)a reservation for my chrurch wedding (church, caterer, reception, wedding coordinator, florist)
I dnt have work as of the moment too as i just resigned and i were working in dubai for the last 3 years. The proof of my financial is the recpts where my sister is sending me money monthly and some of my savings from dubai.
Do you think the embassy will check your business? as i have my business permit but now i just closed my computer shop as i have to move it to some other place but my business permit will due on Nov 2011. If so do you think they will ask for my income tax return too?
I really need your help as i am very desperate to be with my fiance. And how much do you think the show money will be. He will be my sponsor anyway.

    • wanderlass 05/27/2011 at 12:08 pm #

if you’re only applying for a tourist visa, i don’t see any of these will affect your application. just ask your fiancee to send u an invitation and proof of support during your stay. but if u r applying for fiancee visa, sorry it’s outside of my research.

      • angel 05/27/2011 at 12:11 pm #

yes im applying for tourist visa. ok lang po ba kahit wala akong work but i have money on my bank acct? d ko rin alam kung anong proof ang ibibigay bakit ako nagka roon ng money sa acct ko, actually savings ko un at wdraw ko xa sa dubai

Good day! I’m writing to you and would like to ask a good favor to please advice me with my plans again of reapply to UK again, after i was denied early January of this year(2011), i applied for tourist visa & i got refused for refusal entry for lack of payslip from my employment. But now, i am trying again for some luck and few changes now, this time i have a property now, just acquire thru pag ibig, paying for 7months now, a stock bonds from the bank, a little money in the bank, checking account(for my house mortgage purpose) and supporting documents & a letter of invitation from my boyfriend (UK Citizen). We haven’t met in person as he never been here, but our relationship is close to 3years now. The question now, IS THERE A CHANCE FOR ME TO GET A UK VISA NOW? Well, as I plan to reapply again? Pls advice me as I really want to join my boyfriend there. Hope to hear from you soon or anyone can help me to give tips & great advice how to be successful to get a visa. Any advices will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. May God bless & guide us always.

  125. Peter 04/26/2011 at 2:05 pm #

I just had a look at the visa application form. One of the questions is ‘have you ever been deported from a country?’

I was refused entry to Honk Kong onces as I did not have a sponser. Will this cause problems if I say YES?

    • wanderlass 04/28/2011 at 2:21 pm #

i dont understand bec Phil passport doesn’t require visa to HKG. In any case though, in my opinion, u should always declare everything, lying may cause u more problem if they found out.

      • Peter 05/01/2011 at 10:35 am #

Thankyou for this. I am also never too sure about ‘Spouse/Partner’. I plan to travel from Philippines with my boyfriend, who is from UK. He will be covering the costs of the journey, but can I list him as a partner? It seems like it does not necessarily mean you need to be married. any ideas?

        • Peter 05/27/2011 at 12:06 pm #

As an update to my case, I went to the VFS office on a Friday last week and handed in all the documents. The next Wednesday, a courier delivered my passport back….with a 6 month UK Visa inside. Yessss!!!! Only 3 days for a success.
I would say that this was achieved by me and my boyfriend giving mountains of information (I believe the most important thing was a strong supporting letter from him and 6 months of his bank statements) and all of it 100% true and supportable. Again, thankyou to Wanderlass for creating this very interesting Blog. Salamat po.

hello there? nabasa ko to na experience mo and congrats na rin, can i ask original ba yung mga documents na passed mo? anu anu yung mga documents na pinasa mo sa embassy? im waiting for the reply thanks.

      • Europedreamer 04/01/2013 at 3:18 pm #

Wow, I really find this comment useful in my case. One of the questions in the application form is “Have you ever been refused a visa for any country, including UK?” Historically, I applied for a US Visa last 2010 and was denied. i think because of me being single. and for them it is not enough to prove that i will go back to the Phil. I was planning to answer “NO” for that question so to avoid any reasons for them to deny me, but, after reading this. I believe honesty is still the best policy.

    • Europedreamer 04/01/2013 at 3:21 pm #

Peter, did you really answer YES and still they grant you UK Visa? Your reply is much appreciated

    • Prechie 04/26/2011 at 10:31 pm #

Wow! Good for you Alfred! I’m green with envy! I so wanted to go at the time of the Royal Wedding but my budget won’t permit…lol. Accommodations are higher on those days….

      Enjoy your trip Alfred! =)

  127. Prechie 04/22/2011 at 8:51 am #

Finally you got your UK visa! I guess the Royal Wedding has indeed something to do with the long wait.

When are you planning to go?? I’m leaving on May 9, too bad its a few days after the wedding lol. But it’s a good thing too because the accommodations are outrageously priced on those days.

    Have a safe trip!

Hi Lil , I now have my UK tourist visa issued recently and Im planning to travel few Schengen states to start with Rome , France and Spain . Do I need to apply visa for each or just one Schengen application ?

    • wanderlass 04/20/2011 at 6:32 pm #

Schengen visa covers the 3 countries you’re going to, which is saying you only need to apply once. I’ve a very detailed post of procedure for applying one.

Thanks for the very helpful article! Indeed, acquiring a visa is such a pain in the a** for us Philippine passport holders. We are currently applying for a New Zealand visitor visa and is awaiting results as of the moment.

    • wanderlass 03/11/2011 at 12:28 pm #

that’s right and the worst part (for me) is to have to go thru the labyrinth of information. it must be intentionally made complicated so that u lose interest. it sux coz in here, we’re always like, “hey! visit Philiipines” so we give everyone 21days free visa. and these countries go, Philippines, work your ass to prove u’re worthy enough to come to our country. :p

  133. Karenskie 03/11/2011 at 12:51 am #

Wow very helpful article! I just hope I can quickly save up for a Euro Trip hehe! For the bank statements and certs, do they check for a specific amount and does it have to be within the account for a fair bit of time? Thanks!

hoping one for South Korea too! :)

wooow! it’s that complicated na? i dont remember bringing all those docs. but yeah they are very strict with the photo. i had to come back because they discovered my photo was not recent (within 6mos)..cuz they saw it on my old passport attached to the machine readable passport! bwahhahaha!

and it’s that expensive na? i remember paying not more than Php4,000 only on 2008.
